male cropped Your Questions About Hgtv Remodeled Bathrooms

admin answers:

The best way to start is do a search for a home improvement company in your area. You can do this via the internet researching websites like angieslist.com and servicemagic.com. There you can get feedback on the company (if available) to see how they have performed for other customers in the past. Always read the customer comments. A company may get a great rating but when you read what customers have to say like "doesn't show up on time" or "way over budget", you can get some greater insight into that company's performance. Licensing and certifications, such as in lead paint, are crucial. Always ask for current non-relative references and call every one of them. I would also recommend looking for a company that has in house design people who can help you create the space you want for how you and your husband are living in your home today. Good luck!

Carol asks…

Barry on Hgtv's Hidden Potential?

Ok am I the only one, or isn't the concept of this show kinda dumb?
People are buying old fixer uppers just to redo it....that part doesn't bother me...but the fact that Barry Woods comes up with these expensive *** prices to remodel rooms in the homes.
The architect/designer Paige seems more reasonable with her estimates. She would stay way under the persons budget. Barry on the other hand moves kitchen and bathrooms, and its just ridiculous to me.
His hand movements also annoy me...sometimes the potential homeowners look real disappointed with the estimates he presents to them

admin answers:

I agree, I really think he goes for the curved walls and ideas that will be dated in 10 years and cost that are not needed.
Why do they need glass tile?

Paige is more realistic with what they have to do.

I did have some fun explaining to my wife what I would do to our house mocking Barry's body crouching & movements and arm waving.. She got a big laugh.

Your Questions About Ikea State College

William asks…

Why would anyone belittle someone for being a poor college student? ROP (short)?

I have a B.A. and an M.A., and I'm now working on my Ph.D. (should be ABD in a semester or two). Obviously I'm not 22, and most people my age are getting married, moving to the suburbs and having babies. To be fair, I did get married when I was younger, but it just didn't work out (and no babies, thank God). So now I live in a tiny studio apartment and basically live on student loans and research jobs (the ones for students at this school are part-time and don't pay much, but are good experience). Anyway, I don't have a lot. I have a seven-year-old car with a ding on the front bumper and my apartment furniture is all heaving Ikea bookshelves and a futon.

So I just got dissed over the phone by an old college acquaintance for the reasons stated above (including my sad lack of furniture...gee, I'm so sorry I can't afford a penthouse decked in the latest from Crate and Barrel or Anthropologie). It's not like I'm a shiftless drugdealer or something. The job opportunities for someone in my field with a Ph.D. are really good (I will most definitely have to move...oh well...good-bye home sweet studio) and I've chosen not to have kids and buy a house of live off of credit cards like I know so many of my old colleagues are doing (30,000 a year millionaires, anyone?). So my priorities are different. Why on earth would a grown woman go to the trouble of making fun of it, though?

It is obviously bugging me. I don't think it's fair or valid and would be like me making some comment about her living beyond her means or having kids with a man who didn't want them and who cheats on her (which is true...but guess what, it's rude and hurtful).

Do you point out other peoples' flaws as you perceive them? Do you know someone like that? What is behind that kind of behavior?
Yeah, I'm not someone who coos over kids...I don't really like kids. I can't impressed with expensive things from people who I know can't afford it and have all their credit cards maxed out, so it's hard for me to compliment a new 1K handbag from someone who was contemplating filing for bankruptcy a few months ago. I guess I should pretend to be impressed with a facade of wealth...ugh, not gonna happen. I'm from the school of "if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all", but I guess that doesn't fly anymore.

male cropped Your Questions About Ikea State College

admin answers:

I would guess insecurity. Some people define themselves by what they own. If you don't see this as important then it makes them feel that perhaps they aren't that great - maybe having a new car every year and a large house isn't everything.

I think that this is the problem rather than your modest means, if you were really impressed, cooed and said "wow I wish I had a new car/house/flat screen tv" and admired their things they paraded in front of you then they would be happy.

John asks…

i'm living with the girlfriend

hey guys,
i go to college out of state and happened to meet my girlfriend there. we actually live in the same area when were home for summer, too. but, she's got an apartment with her older sister and her sister's friends (she doesn't know them very well). anyways, we've been dating for some time now and we've talked about moving in. well, i got a 1 bedroom apartment and it's very nice and we've gone to great lengths to make the apartment modern and looking nice and spent a lot of money at ikea (ugh). but, it looks nice. ever since then, we've really been talking about her moving in. we started talking about it a couple months ago, but now we're committed to doing it. she's moving her stuff in and it's something we're excited about. but, i just need some advice or some good, helpful pointers on what to expect or other people's personal experiences. this is very exciting for us, and i'm excited to do it and she's very excited for it. obviously, it gives us privacy and we like that fact. but, it gives us a chance to be with each other a whole bunch. also, it's cool to know that we can go to sleep with each other and wake up next to each other. but, if anyone could give me some input, advice, experiences...i'd definitely appreciate it. thanks again!!

admin answers:

Be aware of the fact that you need to get used to eachother in this new way. Take into count that you may argue at first but let it go..talk things out and give breathing room to eachother. Talk about it now...work out a plan when you need that room or when something bothers you. Getting used to little quirks can be bothersome but small things. Don't let the small things ruin a good thing. Remember what is important..your relationship.
Good Luck..make it work!~

Your Questions About Kitchen Remodeling Photos

John asks…

I'm looking for virtual remodeling web sites that I can use a photo of my kitchen.?

I've tried sears.com, and my virtual model. I want to be able to choose paint color, backsplash, flooring, etc.

Jenny asks…

Is there a virtual remodeling tool where you can upload your own photo?

I am in the process of buying a house and I want to remodel the kitchen. I'd like to find some kind of remodeling tool where I can upload an actual photo of the kitchen I want to remodel. I would prefer it to be free but would pay to download if it wasn't too much.

male cropped Your Questions About Kitchen Remodeling Photos

admin answers:

Hi. This is unlikely. The images used in these systems are treated by a human using special mapping software and the elements i.e. The kitchen in your case is specified as the component which will be changed. The coordinates of the components are used so as to replace them with the new content. Although it is desirable to input your own pictures it would require an automated image analysis tool which I've thought of developing, but it is not easy.

If you were very keen to do this and had a spare few hundred thousand squidlets, give me a shout.

I was responsible for the development of the system used by Antrim Carpets. The database system was developed in Germany and the image processing and preparation was done in Holland. The technology is the same used by Volkswagen to demonstrate the colour combinations on their web site. If you need further details contact Apostrophe Consultants Limited on 0771 3636 703

Maria asks…

how much would it cost to remodel basement 532 sq ft.?

male cropped Your Questions About Basement Remodeling Costs

admin answers:

It depends upon what you want to do! A remodel can cost from as little as $3. A square foot or as much as $100 a square foot! (or more)
Are you adding or moving walls? Moving doors? Are you bringing in plumbing or putting in a bathroom??
These cost a lot more than maybe just painting and reflooring. A simple remodel could be installing a tile floor and new paint, and new fixtures; For that I'd plan on spending about $600 if you do it yourself, or $1500 to pay a contractor to do for you.

Steven asks…

How much would it cost to finish and remodel my basement?

i want to rent out my basement by adding a small kitchen with a stove and oven, microwave, dishwasher, sink and two, small, counter tops. I want to add a bathroom with a corner shower, double sink vanity, and toilet. I don't have any plumbing down there. I also need to add a small walls and doors. thanks!!

male cropped Your Questions About Basement Remodeling Costs

admin answers:

Ollie, people often hire a remodeling contractor to do something like this--totally remodel their basement into a living place--since it usually requires a lot of trades (electrical, interior walls, etc.), and a remodeling contractor usually handles all of such trades, making it--in theory--cheaper to pay one contractor as opposed to paying each specialized-trade contractor. There are plenty of local remodeling contractors seeking to give free estimates with no obligation, and taking advantage of this is the consumer-smart way to go about finding an accurate answer to your question. It's important that you get a local estimate and not rely on guesses found here on Yah, as a lot of factors really bear on the cost of such a project, including the following: The cost of material and labor greatly varies by location.

A local remodeling contractor can easily assist you in this project of yours. If you negotiate well with the contractor and he buys the building materials for you, you may try to have him pass the discounted cost of the materials to you in exchange for giving him the job, as usually contractors get discounts (called "contractor's discounts" or "contractor's price") when buying from suppliers because of the many purchases they make as required by their jobs.

As I said, free estimates from local remodeling contractors are the key to your success in this home improvement project of yours. Here's a great link to a handyman site that offers free very resourceful information to assist you in determining the cost of your project, and, ultimately, selecting a local remodeling contractor in an effort to get the best deal for you:

David asks…

How much does a bathroom remodel cost?

My bathroom is like 100 years old. I need new EVERYTHING...but I will keep it the same size to save costs on doing a new foundation. With flooring, a new wall, lighting, new appliances, tiles and paint, what is the range it could cost?

Ken asks…

What is the average cost of remodeling a bathroom?

The bath room is about 6x12. There was titlng place half way up the walls(the floor was not done. The rest of the walls were painted by the contractors), a new toilet, a new bathtub with sliding glass doors, a messager head for the shower, a new cabinet with 4 lights with it, a fan in the bathroom with a way for air to ciruclate out(with a light attached to the fan, a towel rack, a metal toilet paper dispencer and a metal robe hook placed on the bathroom door. That what was done. I do realise that it is difficult to estimated when there are other factors un-answered, but please give me a ball park estimate. I believe the current contractors are charging way too much money for a relativly simple project.

Should we put a bathtub in our remodeled bathroom?

We are remodeling our bathroom but did not plan on putting a bathtub in it because we have a hot tub. We were just going to put a shower in it. We do have another full bathroom upstairs that does have a bathtub in it. We plan on selling our house in a couple years and after watching HGTV House Hunters, I see that most people want a bathtub in the master bath. Do you think we should put one in to help sell the house or just forgo the bathtub because we don't use it?

male cropped Your Questions About Remodeled Bathrooms

admin answers:

Most ensuites have a tub and a shower, but you have a hot tub, that can be used instead, and you do have a tub in another bathroom. Most ensuites have a tub, but if it makes your room too crowded, I would not add it to your room. I am a firm believer, that you are the one living in there, so design the house for you (unless you are flipping it). You stated you will be selling in a couple of years, but lots can change between now and then. Don't put it in...you will curse it being in your way and taking up your room space.

I am looking for a barn style home design and need help?

I want it to have a barn style roof, I have found tons of barn style homes but not with the barn style roof. I was looking for some plans to look at so I wouldn`t have to draw none out. I would like for it to have 4 bedrooms and 2 and a half bathrooms. And a full basement and preferably 2 story. And not to fancy, I also found some that were just way to fancy for me. I would like to check in on prices for barn style kits like I want and see how much they would be. Thanks so much

Betty asks…

What does it mean for a person to go up in equity?

I just finished watching an episode of Income Property on HGTV with host Scott McGlively. It's the show where tehy renovate a basement apartment into a bachelor's apartment. It was a really nice design--they painted the walls a light yellow, laid zebra print wood panels on the floor, and installed new fixtures in the kitchen and bathroom--which contained a stall. The yellow walls really made the room alive.

Anyway, on the show, when he was talking to the red-headed woman and her husband, he told them something like(to paraphrase) they went up in equity. I've seen other shows on HGTV where they say --the homeowner's equity went up. Anyway, at the end of the show, they said that convertign the basement into an apartment added 80,000 to their house in value.

My question is--what does it mean when they say -- a person went up in equity or the equity increased? Does this mean that they got more than they invested or will reap a huge profit compared to the amount they invested or just that the value of their property/investment went up?

male cropped Your Questions About Bathroom Designs For Basements

admin answers:

It means that the value went up, while the loan amount stayed the same, which results in a higher equity. If the value is now $180,000.00 and the loan is $100,000.00, then you have $80,000.00 in equity.

Your Questions About Remodeled Basements

Mandy asks…

is it worth the investment to insulate walls in a remodeled basement?

male cropped Your Questions About Remodeled Basements

admin answers:

Yes - both for heat and cold. It will make the basement much more confortable to use and it will increase the value of your home. It will also cost you less to cool (A/C) or heat --you can save $ on expensive heating fuels and or electric. Good Luck.

Betty asks…

I recently remodeled my basement. What can I use to absorb sound? The room is fairly large & echos.?

I was told that once I furnished the room, the echo would be cut down, but that doesn't seem to be the case. While the entire room is not carpeted, parts of it are, but even that doesn't seem to have helped all that much.

male cropped Your Questions About Remodeled Basements

admin answers:

Drapes along a wall or two will help to cut down the echos. Also folding screens, if you don't like drapes, will work.

Ken asks…

Do you have a shower curtain or glass door in your bath?

We just expanded our bathroom and can't decide if we should get a glass door or a shower curtain for the shower/tub area. The tub is a larger deep soaking tub and I think it would be easier having a fancy curtain. Are shower curtains out of style now for newly remodeled, expanded bathrooms? It is a ground floor bath, not the master bathroom by the bedrooms upstairs... Any ideas? Thanks.

male cropped Your Questions About Master Bathroom Remodel Ideas

admin answers:

I have had both, I prefer the curtain and liner.

The glass doors take more space, and either have to swing open, and if they slide open, they only slide 1/2 the width of the tub.

Plus, if you fall through a curtain, it does not shatter and cut you.

Ruth asks…

Replacing bathroom vanity, how to get new one to fit?

I am remodeling my master bathroom and I have already ripped out the old vanity and I'm about to put in the new one. The old vanity and top appeared to be of normal length (60'/61'), like the new pair I picked up at Lowes (I did a quick measure and it looked close, so I assumed it was of standard size). However, the geniuses who built my home built the space for the vanity (between a regular wall and a half-wall beside the toilet) exactly 60' wide. So while the vanity will squeeze in, the vanity top won't. I am thinking I will have to end up removing the half-wall, but I want to do as little work as possible. Is there a way to shave an inch off the wall? Anybody think of any ideas?

BTW, the vanity top is a marble top, so I doubt I can shave an inch off that.....Thanks in advance.
My home is fairly new (2005), but the half-wall is old hat. My issue with the half wall is that it has an outlet and a switch that turns on a light.

male cropped Your Questions About Master Bathroom Remodel Ideas

admin answers:

If this is my bathroom i will just cut the drywall on the both sides of the vanity and slide the granite
top in or you can call a company that install granite and they can cut it for you for extra $50-60
