How does basement remodeling affect the resale value of your home? Al Cloern, owner of Basements Unlimited answers your questions concerning Basement Remodeling for Westerville and Upper Arlington Ohio.

How does basement remodeling affect the resale value of your home? I would be misleading you if I told you I could tell you that exact amount a basement remodel will add to your home value. Because every neighborhood and area is totally different; and how much you put into your basement remodeling project is obviously going to have a tremendous impact on what percentage you get back out of your finished basement.

I can tell you that I get many clients telling me all the time that they sold their home because of the way the basement was finished. It was remodeled just like the rest of the house, if not better and that sold the people on their new house. When choosing to remodel your basement look for a contractor that will create a living space that will look and feel like the rest of your home.

A finished basement not only gives you as the current home owner a comfortable place to entertain, watch TV or hang out with family, it also gives potential buyers the same advantages. A basement remodeling project can add to the overall comfort and function of a home, when you have additional living space to offer it will increase the benefits to the home buyer looking for the best home for their budget.

Al Cloern is an expert in basement remodeling who regularly contributes articles and videos designed for the home owner faced with a basement finishing project. John asks…

Remodeling my kitchen(NJ). How far should I keep my electric outlets from my sink?

male cropped Your Questions About Kitchen Remodeling Nj

admin answers:

All your counter top outlets should be GFCI protected as they are all susceptible to water exposure whether they are 6' from the sink or not.
The exceptions being the outlets for the garbage disposal, dishwasher, and refrigerator.

Small bathroom remodelling help?

We have a tiny walk- through bathroom (one door in my bedroom, the other in the family room) that my husband and I want to remodel ourselves. Are there any online sites were you can design your own bathroom with a given dimension?

male cropped Your Questions About Small Remodeled Bathrooms

admin answers:

Try DIY or maybe this old house. They may not have exact dimensions but will have great ideas and how to find out what you'll need. Good luck.Usually just cosmetic changes make a big difference. Like changing colors with paint, changing knobs, mirrors, shower curtains and ruga as well as the shower curtain. Maybe even the faucets. Good luck.

What is the least expensive way to remodel a small bathroom?

I have an 8x10 bathroom with a tub/shower, toilet, and fiberboard cabinet. There is a semi-useful fan above the tub, and a window between the toilet and tub. The bathroom is high in humidity, and I am always battling moisture mold.

Which is more difficult B2B sales or B2C sales and why?

I’m having a debate with a friend. I work in sales selling home renovations. We do deck/patio additions, basement renovations & remodeling kitchins.ect. I deal directly with the home owner. He works in sales with a major business-to-business software and service corporation. They deal strictly with other businesses with internet-enabled databases, tools, and application products, along with related consulting, education, and support services. The question is which is overall more difficult and which talents are easier to transfer over to the other. Both of us are successful in our related fields.

male cropped Your Questions About Basement Remodeling Software

admin answers:

A B2C option is mostly much more challenging than a B2B sales.

Consumers are more skeptical in paying outward, so gaining their trust is the critical factor. But for B2B sales, it often lies on the factor of functionality, cost, and the offerer reputation.

need ideas for bathroom wall and floor TILE combinations that look good... and other bathroom remodeling ideas?

looking to have tile on shower wall and then tile on the floor... just dont really have any good ideas for combinations that look good... light or dark... big tile or small... subway tile or regular... stone... or what?... please any help is appreciated... THANK YOU

male cropped Your Questions About Bathroom Remodeling Ideas

admin answers:

There is a wide variety of floor / wall combos on the market. All floors being a matte finish and matching wall tile in matte , satin or high gloss to your liking. I don t recommend a high gloss in a wet area, shows water spots and has to be kept wiped down..
There are so many combinations that its hard to describe here.
It all depends on your lighting , the size of room and floors to be done. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there GL

Ideas for bathroom remodeling?

I'm looking for tile ideas (floor, wall, shower/tub area), countertop/sink type (granite? ceramic?), sink cabinet (wood colors and styles). Am thinking modern colors with good resale value. No doors on tub area, just shower curtain. Your input please.
Not quite interested in pedestal sinks, though that's the trend these days.

All I know is electric, put a big enough fan in to move air quietly, separate switch, good lighting separate switch, don't buy a fixture light from a box that has been opened before u got there u don't know whats missing and it could cost u more to replace what is missing, consider in floor heat under the tile with a thermostat and or a timer so it dosn'tstay on longer than it needs tobe. And look at al the types of switches, maybe decora type (rockerstyle), and dont forget outlets if u have two (2) sinks you need one adjacent each sink not 1 in the middle. And if u can help it dont put a light in the shower I have seen last long there, usually a good bare type lite over the sink throws alot of light to get into the shower area good luck

Your Questions About Remodeled Basements

Maria asks…

What flooring would be best for a remodeled basement that gets lots of traffic and has a large dog?

male cropped Your Questions About Remodeled Basements

admin answers:

A quality laminate ( donn t get the sale priced 99 or a 1.49$ stuff)
A laminate that carries a decent warranty will prove to be a much better deal in the long run. The locking system wont pull apart like some cheaper stuff.
Ceramic tile can be the same price as a quality laminate by the time you figure in the thin set and grout. But you must do this your self to get the over all savings.
One other option is Traffic Master Aluure , very inexpensive and made of a pvc material that water will not effect it at all. Water won t hurt ceramic either where it can destroy laminate..
Sheet vinyl itself can be rather inexpensive if you do it yourself. And I d only do it your self if there is no seaming involved.
Any of these hard surfaces will work great along with some well placed area rugs for warmth.
Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar. GL

Robert asks…

Question about load bearing walls?

Last year my husband and I bought a one story ranch that was built in 1945. The kitchen has a laundry room addition built off of it. The wall separating the laundry room and the kitchen is one of the original outside walls of our house - the wall just has an open doorway to the laundry room, and where there was obviously a window before the addition was built, they simply made it an interior window between the two rooms.

We are wanting to remodel the kitchen and remove the wall between the two rooms to make it one big room (both rooms are extremely small now... I'm talking each is 9x7.5). I was reading on one website that load-bearing walls is only an issue in multi-story houses. Is that true?

My husband is a mechanical engineer, but we are in our early twenties and don't have a lot of experience with things like this. If load-bearing walls is a concern even in one story homes, is there a way my husband can tell if it is a load-bearing wall, and if not, what kind of contractor should we call?

Does anyone have any idea how much this might cost?

Also, If it helps, our house has no basement and is on an 18" raised concrete slab.

male cropped Your Questions About Small Basement Remodeling Ideas

admin answers:

I agree that pretty much any outer wall is load bearing. You may or may not need a permit depending on where you live, I wouldn't need one where I live. You can open up the wall using a long temporary support beam to support the weight during the removal of the old wall and a new permanent support beam to support the weight when you are done. It would need to be very strong, like a manufactured "I" beam or two 2 x 10's nailed to gether and supported at the ends in the adjoining walls or in the area where you are removing the present wall. You may wish to hire this part of your job done to make sure it is done quickly and correctly. Good luck.

Susan asks…

We need a name for our new basement bar......?

We are in the process remodeling our basement and are making a bar out of half of it. We want it to portray a fun, home away from home, cozy, watering hole type feel. It is small and intended to be a place for our family and friends to come sing karaoke, play darts pool and cards, watch the games and have a few drinks. Most of us like country and classic rock music, the outdoors. We are using natural, burnt, and stained woods, bamboo and sugarcane. Our names are Jim and Kerri, he calls me his Genie, and when I am talking about us, I say Jim-and-I (sounds like Gemini) Any good Ideas for a name? Nothing crude, we have 3 teanagers and an 8 year old. Thanks for your help!!

Your Questions About Remodeled Bathrooms

Daniel asks…

Buying a 104 yearold house-the radiators were removed from remodeled bathrooms-asking if i want to keep them?

So i am in the process of buying a 100+ year old house. The house has modern kitchen and bathrooms but the floors and many of the other rooms are original. The radiators were removed from the bathrooms and are now in the basement and the homeowner just asked me if i want to keep them or if I want them to discard of them. Is there any reason why I should hang on to these? I can't think of any since they've already been taken out.

Thanks!

male cropped Your Questions About Remodeled Bathrooms

admin answers:

If you have the same radiators in the rest of the house I would hold onto one just in case.

Donna asks…

What are some good websites for information & pictures of remodeled small bathrooms using ceramic tile?

I have looked at websites until it feels like my eyes are crossed but I haven't found any that have great information about small bathrooms. Most seem to concentrate on the large, expansive, wonderful bathrooms. I'd love one of those of course, but I don't have the space.

male cropped Your Questions About Remodeled Bathrooms

admin answers:

Most companies are going to focus on large rooms so they can showcase more design elements of their product.

This site lets you look at some generic set ups and change tile/wall colors. You can pay $15 to get software to load pictures of your bathroom and then create your own images.
