What flooring would be best for a remodeled basement that gets lots of traffic and has a large dog?
admin answers:
A quality laminate ( donn t get the sale priced 99 or a 1.49$ stuff)
A laminate that carries a decent warranty will prove to be a much better deal in the long run. The locking system wont pull apart like some cheaper stuff.
Ceramic tile can be the same price as a quality laminate by the time you figure in the thin set and grout. But you must do this your self to get the over all savings.
One other option is Traffic Master Aluure , very inexpensive and made of a pvc material that water will not effect it at all. Water won t hurt ceramic either where it can destroy laminate..
Sheet vinyl itself can be rather inexpensive if you do it yourself. And I d only do it your self if there is no seaming involved.
Any of these hard surfaces will work great along with some well placed area rugs for warmth.
Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar. GL

Last year my husband and I bought a one story ranch that was built in 1945. The kitchen has a laundry room addition built off of it. The wall separating the laundry room and the kitchen is one of the original outside walls of our house - the wall just has an open doorway to the laundry room, and where there was obviously a window before the addition was built, they simply made it an interior window between the two rooms.
We are wanting to remodel the kitchen and remove the wall between the two rooms to make it one big room (both rooms are extremely small now... I'm talking each is 9x7.5). I was reading on one website that load-bearing walls is only an issue in multi-story houses. Is that true?
My husband is a mechanical engineer, but we are in our early twenties and don't have a lot of experience with things like this. If load-bearing walls is a concern even in one story homes, is there a way my husband can tell if it is a load-bearing wall, and if not, what kind of contractor should we call?
Does anyone have any idea how much this might cost?
Also, If it helps, our house has no basement and is on an 18" raised concrete slab.
admin answers:
I agree that pretty much any outer wall is load bearing. You may or may not need a permit depending on where you live, I wouldn't need one where I live. You can open up the wall using a long temporary support beam to support the weight during the removal of the old wall and a new permanent support beam to support the weight when you are done. It would need to be very strong, like a manufactured "I" beam or two 2 x 10's nailed to gether and supported at the ends in the adjoining walls or in the area where you are removing the present wall. You may wish to hire this part of your job done to make sure it is done quickly and correctly. Good luck.

We need a name for our new basement bar......?
We are in the process remodeling our basement and are making a bar out of half of it. We want it to portray a fun, home away from home, cozy, watering hole type feel. It is small and intended to be a place for our family and friends to come sing karaoke, play darts pool and cards, watch the games and have a few drinks. Most of us like country and classic rock music, the outdoors. We are using natural, burnt, and stained woods, bamboo and sugarcane. Our names are Jim and Kerri, he calls me his Genie, and when I am talking about us, I say Jim-and-I (sounds like Gemini) Any good Ideas for a name? Nothing crude, we have 3 teanagers and an 8 year old. Thanks for your help!!

Buying a 104 yearold house-the radiators were removed from remodeled bathrooms-asking if i want to keep them?
So i am in the process of buying a 100+ year old house. The house has modern kitchen and bathrooms but the floors and many of the other rooms are original. The radiators were removed from the bathrooms and are now in the basement and the homeowner just asked me if i want to keep them or if I want them to discard of them. Is there any reason why I should hang on to these? I can't think of any since they've already been taken out.
Thanks!
admin answers:
If you have the same radiators in the rest of the house I would hold onto one just in case.

What are some good websites for information & pictures of remodeled small bathrooms using ceramic tile?
I have looked at websites until it feels like my eyes are crossed but I haven't found any that have great information about small bathrooms. Most seem to concentrate on the large, expansive, wonderful bathrooms. I'd love one of those of course, but I don't have the space.
admin answers:
Most companies are going to focus on large rooms so they can showcase more design elements of their product.
This site lets you look at some generic set ups and change tile/wall colors. You can pay $15 to get software to load pictures of your bathroom and then create your own images.

What is the best snowboard pant in the 686 smarty line?
I am pretty sure i am going with the 686 smarty line, they seem to have everything i need. I was going to buy the complete 2.5 ply but heard they rip too easy. I have also looked at the command, marker, and OG cargo. Any recommendations? I need something waterproof, warm and affordable.
admin answers:
I use the 686 smarty uzi pants they come with a removable liner fleece that keeps you super warm without having to wear any thermals on underneath, and since it's removable on warm days you can just take it out. Love those pants, they are a bit on the heavy side though but super warm and has a good waterproofing of 15k I believe.
Betty asks…
What size 686 smarty rise above jacket should I get?
I'm 5'6-5'7 and I wear Medium in most of my clothes that I wear, but I heard that 686 jackets run big. What size would be good for me?
admin answers:
I'm 5'5 and I wear a small in a 686 Smarty Strap and it is still massive on me. The smarty line seems to run bigger than the rest of 686s lines for some reason.
I'd go with a small but I'd do some quick measuring first just to be sure. This chart is pretty accurate http://www.dogfunk.com/dogfunk/sizingchart.html?sizing_id=590&sku=SES0518&pg_id=100000246&subcat_id=20&cat_id=11%27
I am remodeling my kitchen on a budget, how can I get paint my cabinets a high gloss white?
I really would like a professional looking finish, I am putting new hardware on them and really like the idea of a glossy white NON painted look, any ideas? Can I take them and have them dipped or coated? Thanks!
admin answers:
If you want them perfect with no brush strokes or roller marks they need to be sprayed. You need to sand the cabinets so they have no blemishes. Remove all hardware and spray them with a high quality gun. I've used my spraytech airless sprayer for doors and it worked awesome without flaw. Also do not use a cheap quality paint. Go to Sherwin Williams or a reputable place like that and get their acrylic enamel that resists chipping and holds up to more. Its like $30 / gallon but well worth it.

I want to remodel my kitchen on a budget...?
...because we just bought a house and don't have any money for any kind of remodeling.
I love all white kitchens and want to get new cabinets put in. Has anyone worked in phases to get their kitchen done?
I mean, I could get the wall cabinets done, then wait for the base cabinets and countertops. The third phase could be flooring and lighting. And the last would be appliances --if at all.
This could take 5-10 years. Of course, I wouldn't have matching cabinets but that doesn't bother me because I don't like everything to match anyway. It would, of course, be a pain because of contractors working the house.
Other than that, do you see any disadvantages?
Can it be done? Anyone done something similar?
admin answers:
You can remodel your kitchen in stages, but not over a 5 year period and definitely not over a 10 year period. If you have the credit to buy a home, then you could get a line of credit from Lowe's or Home Depot and that would facilitate a remodel. You could purchase what is called stock cabinetry and it wouldnt cost you more than 1500. Lowe's has stock cabinetry that is unfinished and Home Depot has stock cabinetry that is prefinished, the only downside is that you have to put it together. If you really planned this out well, you could do a complete remodel for 3500 or less.
Id be more than happy to help you in any way that I can. Email me!
Does anyone know of any good home contractor in MD? How much would it cost to renovate basement of 500 square feet. I would like to renovate existing bath by replacing upright shower, install new sink, replace toilet and put dry wall and door to separate from the laundry room and also carpet the floors. Is $5000 or under reasonable?
admin answers:
If they are in your area, I used to work for a company in Parkville, MD, called Post and Beam Construction. They are a top quality, customer oriented company, that will work within your budget. Check out their web site. The owners names are Scott and Bill, and their phone is 410-515-6464. Good Luck

If so, what kind of window dressing do you put on it? How do you keep it from molding & rotting? My grandma has a window in her shower, and right now she has plastic mini blinds on it. They look awful, and the wood wondowsill is rotten. I'd like to help her redo it. Do you have a solution for making this window look nice?
admin answers:
You're going to need to replace the entire unit. I would replace it with a frosted glass, lets in light and nothing else. Frosted glass with a vinyl coated sash or aluminum.

We just had our bathroom redone by Rebath and now we are running out of hot water 10 minutes into a shower.?
The bathroom looks great, but they switched us from a seperate hot and cold knob to a single knob. We never had this problem before and the hot water heater is only 3 years old.
Thanks
The temp setting is set to hot...it is funny because about 30min to an hour after the water runs out, we get hot water back again. scalding!
admin answers:
Try tis first .. Check your hot water heater settings to see if the temp is set too low. Second under the handle is a plastic hot water setting you can see it right away, then change it to a higher setting by pulling it out and re positioning it. Last call them back.
I am a bilingual construction worker can i get a job in mexico?
I have 10 years exp. on remodel lots of houses from simple fixes to kitchen and baht rooms to basements doing almost all trades of the construction want to move to mexico can I score a job there?
M
I SPEAK SPANISH AND INGLES FLUENTLY
admin answers:
You can forget about it. You can Not work in Mexico without a Permit and Nuclear Scientists are in demand. Any potentcial employer has to inform immigration that he can`t find a Mexican to do the job. You would never get the permit. If you did , which you won`t you would make $20--25 a Day for your trouble. There is a reason for all the illegals in the US. Stay where you are and save enough to retire here at an early age is my advice.
To the other user Bilingual means having the knowledge or ability to Speak two languages. I know you are Canadian now.

Electrical question?
My boyfriend and i are remodeling a house that we bought from a repo company, and it was in very rough shape. In particular, the fuse box in the basement had all the wires coming out of it cut and some pulled out of the ceiling. I want to know if we will have to rewire the entire house or if this can be fixed in a simpler way.
admin answers:
Depending on the condition and age of your circuits, you may want to rewire the whole house. If the wires are in good shape except for whats been cut, you can use junction boxes to reconnect them. However you must have every junction box accessible. That is code by NEC. Do yourself a favor and update your system to a 200 amp panel if it isn't already now.
