Sandy asks…

what is a better investment shower or bath???

i am planning on remodeling my parents guest bathroom at some point. the 3 bedroom 2 bath house has a tiny little guest/kids bathroom with a bath/shower in it... i want to rip out everything because of its condition and i was wondering what sells better when it comes to selling the house? i could put in a large shower or put a bathtub+shower... any ideas... it would help if you are a realestate agent or just sold a house thanks...
this is the "main" bathroom in the hallway

this is the only bathtub in the house

this is a house in the san jose suburbs (south san jose) target is deffenently not older people

male cropped Your Questions About Tiny Bathroom Remodel Ideas

admin answers:

I would stay with a bathtub/shower combination since it is the only place for a bathtub in the house. When it comes to selling a home, it is best to keep the areas as versatile as possible. Consider adding a bathtub/shower combo that has some luxury features like a jetted tub or massaging shower head if they don't increase the cost by much. Bathroom luxury is a big trend right now in homes.

David asks…

How much does it cost to build an extension to a house?

My current house is about 1,500 square feet and my lot is 6,400. It's 3 bedrooms with 2 tiny bathrooms and a mini kitchen. I don't think I could afford to expand the kitchen - all the water, electrical etc would probably cost a fortune plus it was remodeled a few years ago. I'm thinking to maybe add 1 or 2 bedrooms and 1 or 2 bathrooms depending on the cost, either on a 2nd floor (house is 1 story) or else expand on the first floor but would hate to encroach on the backyard. Do you have any idea how much this costs, in Los Angeles?
I guess just ball park. I have no idea. Is it like 20,000 or 200,000... I only have so much I can spend plus with the economy in a slump I'm hoping to get a good deal or else I can just put it off...

male cropped Your Questions About Tiny Bathroom Remodel Ideas

admin answers:

You don't say how many people are living in that house.
1500 square feet is a good size. A house is for a safe place to sleep and to eat, and a place to be when it rains while you are awake.
The rest of the time, be in the yard.
I suggest this, build an outbuilding that's about 600 square feet, pier and beam. Just a shell of a building, because the insides will be re-arranged a lot.. Local building codes might require electrical and plumbing for a building that size.

The building is not for a residence, make sure they can't try to tax you as if it were. That building becomes a workshop and a storage place. This will help keep the house tidy and organized.

You will still have over 4,000 square feet of lot to roam around in.

You can also build another small building for a kitchen shed, to offset the tiny kitchen you now have.

kitchen remodeling?

i am thinking about buying a new home but the kitchen in the house is horrable. it's a very small kitchen but i'm wondering how much would it cost to redo it.
everything but the sink needs to go!

male cropped Your Questions About Kitchen Remodeling

admin answers:

I don't exactly how much it costs, but I can't say it's cheap. Going over budget is a common situation also. Depending on the region you're in, the wiring/lighting additions you'll need, the company you hire, and the materials you choose to use, this could add up to a large investment. The cost can range from sensible prices to outrageously expensive prices all depending on the choices you make.
Just think about what you would like to do to your kitchen and call some companies and ask them for an estimate.
Is this the house you really want? If so, enjoy your house!
Good Luck!!

Your Questions About Bathroom Remodeling Chicago

Sandra asks…

Bathroom remodeling estimate?

i want to replace my bathtube and one row of tiles around the tube, and the shower unit mixer needs to be replaced. what's a rough estimate you can give me in chicago?
tube = tub

sorry

male cropped Your Questions About Bathroom Remodeling Chicago

admin answers:

A conservative estimate would be around 3k (depending on the fixtures you want installed). You are going to need to hire a plumber to install your tub and mixer assembly and a tile person to do a quality job. The reason I say *conservative* is once you take out the old......you are able to see the problems beneath. Be prepared for pipe or water damage to your subfloor or walls. You should also really look at the style of fixtures and tile BEFORE you consult a contractor. That will help narrow down some costs now.

George asks…

Any experienced Bathroom remodelers in Chicago's NW suburbs?

I have 3 baths in my house, all basically need to be remodeled, probably a the full bath and a half bath will need to be done first. Then the third bath in a couple years.

Anyone have good experiences with a specific company? I would llike to get some quotes on paper (not just approximates) before i start any work. Anyone, Anyone?

thanks..

Kitchen Remodels: Kitchen Remodeling Dollar Amount For New Kitchens
Kitchen Remodeling Lesson Three: Dollar Investment
Kitchen Remodels: Kitchen Remodeling Dollar Amount

Everyone looking to remodel a kitchen has the important question to consider - "How much does a new kitchen cost?"

Guess what? There is an answer!
And your Answer - How much does a new car cost?

Amazingly the investment for a new car is very close to the investment for new kitchen cabinets. As there is a wide range in car selections and car quality, so is the range and selection for new kitchen cabinets. A basic little Geo Metro, Ford Escort, Saturn, and a small car like my first car (Toyota Corolla) all differ greatly in price from a top of the line SUV shall we say Hummer, Jeep, or Bigfoot himself.

To get the right price on the right vehicle usually doing your homework and understanding your investment is in your best interest. This is the case with new cabinets, in almost the exact same manner and price range. Going with used cabinets offers the same type of problems as buying a used car does to the purchaser.

Know what goes into each task when you talk to kitchen designers or remodel contractors. By taking time to understand the kitchen planning you will be able to control the cost of the new kitchen.

You are still reading! You are doing better than 6 out of seven readers! You love knowledge and I know you are on your way to Kitchen Remodeling Success! Keep up the diligence!

Remodeling your own kitchen in this manner will seem scary at first. As you put together your planning information box, all at once things will fall into place. If you like putting together 5,000 piece jig saw puzzles you may not like this task as the jig saw puzzle will only be around 100 pieces. It still will be a challenge to most of us, and understanding the kitchen design will not be easy until we can look at the jigsaw puzzles box cover and see the big picture.

"Let me see the cover," my sister would say to my brother who were both big into jigsaw puzzles. Although I did not have this skill, they both would fight over the box cover and by looking at the cover they could clearly see where each puzzle piece was to be placed.

Read the cover to your new kitchen carefully. Analyze your existing kitchen. Then - choose the right hardware, material, products, and appliances for your kitchen's needs.

Plan a kitchen layout that suits your lifestyle. Include the kitchen dollar investment that is right for you - by doing your homework and taking time to understand the kitchen remodeling process.

Daniel asks…

Can I use wall panels on my basement ceiling?

(I asked this in Decorating and Remodeling but thought I might get more responses here.)

I am planning my basement remodel and love the idea of a tongue and groove look for the ceiling. Is it possible to use painted wall panels screwed into the ceiling beams? That way the mechanics of the house can still be accessed by taking down one 4x8 panel, but I don't have an ugly drop ceiling.

If there is a specific product for this idea already, could anyone provide a link?

Thanks!!

male cropped Your Questions About Basement Remodeling Ideas

admin answers:

(Central WI) We are seeing at lot of high end homes with pretty fancy tongue & groove flooring installed on the ceilings of large entree ways or family room types. These do not have access panels but look pretty sharp. It really depends on your theme but I've also seen galvanized tin panels on the ceilings that looked pretty good. The other thing is the old drop ceilings; they are getting a lot better than they used to be, I've seen some that you could hardly tell were the old drop ceiling. Again depending on your theme; I've seen drywall up with 1" x 4" boards covering the seams creating a grid. This eliminates taping joints and if you have to "break" into an area the damage is pretty light. Other types of molding or trim can be added to the 1 X 4's to really dress things up just like doing fancy crown molding.

Your Questions About Small Remodeled Bathrooms

Sandy asks…

How long will it take to complete a small, bathroom remodel?

Hi all,

I must preface this question with "we only have one bathroom", so time is of the essense.

Here's what we want done:
- New shower/tub insert
- New tile on floor and half way up walls (sorry - not sure what that's called)
- Repair water damage (there's a leak in tub area - it's been going on for about 6 months)
- New cabinet (will order)
- Paint as needed (will keep current color)
- Replace fixtures
- Update plumbing (I think this will be limited)

Other than the water damage, I don't think we'll have to replace/remove any sheetrock. Also, we're keeping the toilet (just replaced).

So, how long do you think this will take and is there any wisdom that you'd like to pass along. We're open to all suggestions. We'll be using a friend's bathroom until all is done, but we want it done fast!

Thanks!

male cropped Your Questions About Small Remodeled Bathrooms

admin answers:

If the water damage isn't all that bad then a couple decent plumbers can have your old shower tore out, the leak fixed and the new shower set in one day. Once they set the cabinet(I'm assuming you mean the vanity/sink) and install the sink the rest is just finish work. Your bathroom will be in working order except for one day or evening when you'll have to stay off the tile while they set up. You'll still be able to use your bath in the evenings after the crews leave. The tile on the walls, minor sheetrock repairs, painting etc. Can be done at your leisure.

Steven asks…

small bathroom remodeling project?

so i'm 17 and my mom's left me to dealing with a really small bathroom we have, it's got a shower with a clear glass door and it's pretty bland and boring with a bright blue trim around the bottom where the walls meet the floor. so my question is how do i fix the ceiling above the shower? it's cracking and looks pretty bad...i was thinking about sanding it and then painting it over but does the type of paint i use matter?
oh and i was thinking about using a light yellow, slate blue, or light green color...any suggestions?
Thanks!

male cropped Your Questions About Small Remodeled Bathrooms

admin answers:

The best thing to do over a shower on a budget is to first scrape all peeling paint, repair the cracks, use kilz and ask to have it tinted to the color of your choice. I think you should keep it white but the next color could be grey since it goes with many colors. GOOD LUCK

Richard asks…

Help with Sweet Sixteen Party?

So, my 16th is in October, and my house is pretty small. I have a basement, but it needs to be remodeled. The floor is cement, the walls are brick and the overhead beams are visible. My backyard is middle sized and I have a trampoline and a small pool (Like 10 ft diameter).

I wanted to invite like 17 people (assuming all of them can come) and celebrate during the end of the summer, like September, so we can use the pool and trampoline? I have an iPod and speakers I can set up to play music. My mom wanted a smaller number and just a sleepover because we really can't afford much, but I figure that all we really have to buy is food, and I was thinking when it gets dark we can pile into the basement and watch a movie.

How does this sound to you guys? Do you think it could use anything else? Or any other ideas? Any suggestions would be great! I just want this to be enjoyable and within my budget.

male cropped Your Questions About Small Basement Remodeling Ideas

admin answers:

Hey! Congrats on the sweet sixteen. I have planned budget parties for me and my best friend combined every year since i turn 15 (i will be 18 this year). This year will be the ultimate. We keep our budget about $50 or less (trust me, this is an incredible feat) and this year, there's gonna be about 70 people (no typo. As in SEVENTY). Trust me girl, you can do this too. 70 may be way too much for you but you can at least do 20-30 for a good sized crowd, not too much for your mom to handle either, all while staying in your budget.

Here's how you do it:
- decorations = $0. That's right. Don't pay for decorations. You're playing in big girl territory at 16. We're not 7 anymore. No balloons. All you need if you want a pinch of pizazz, grab those twinkling lights and tastefully light up the place

-food = very little. Start the party at about 7PM. This is late enough that people are not going to come hungry. Obviously you need some, i mean, when was the last time you went to a party with no food? Never. Get some chips (not too much. Chips aren't a big seller). The big seller (surprise, surprise) veggie and fruit trays! Don't buy them pre-made. That's a ripoff. Get some fruit and vegetables at the grocery store and cut it up, and put 'em on plates. People love this option (i'm a chip girl myself, i don't get it).

- drinks = max $20. Again, a word of advice from past experience, pop doesn't go. What does? BOTTLED WATER. Head to costco or ALDI (definitely visit aldi, it will blow your mind!). Pick up a few cases. Wanna mix it up? Buy those little crystal light drink mix powder packets, the single servings. You want pop? Go for it. But be super prepared for extras.

- cake = $2. Have your mom, or do it yourself, make the birthday cake.
Trust me. YOU WANT A CAKE! You can't have a party with out the cake. Cake mix at aldi is $.89 and frosting is even cheaper.

- music = $0. Never a dj, always an ipod. Its a great idea. Everyone can change the song to what they want, and people will have a blasty-blast!

Girl, if you can pull this off, you will be a savvy party planner!

You can do it!

William asks…

What router should I get ?!? I HAVE NO IDEA WHICH TO GET?

Im want to get a router as soon as my basement is remodeled. I need a wireles router bcuz im going to be getting alot of things that will use wireless.

I need to know which router will be perfect for me. My home isnt big nor is it small. (average 2 floor home) i need a WIRELESS ROUTER THAT HAS MULTIPLE (about 3 or more ethernet ports) so that i can connect all my things like my xbox 360, wii, etc.

which router can handle all that? i keep hearing these wirless G and wireless N router. whats the differencce?????
which one should i go with?

male cropped Your Questions About Small Basement Remodeling Ideas

admin answers:

You should get a linksys router. I have used D-Link and Linksys, I prefer Linksys better.

If you basement has a lot of cement in it and a cement slab above, you may need repeaters.

Find a A/G router, unless your computer uses 802.11N. 802.11N is still in beta testing, I doubt you will have anything using it. The A/G/N are just standard protocols. You don't need to know the details but think of it as different languages. You want a router that speaks the language of your computers wireless card.

Home improvements like new lighting fixtures, new paint, new tile, or even a kitchen remodel, can increase the value of your home if you're trying to refinance or sell your house. Regardless of the reason you want to improve the value or look of your house, the craftsman at the Handyman Connection can get your job done right!

Home Repairs
You can trust the experienced handymen at Handyman Connection with your home repairs or remodel to your house. No matter how old your home is, repairing your home with just a few little updates can result in a new and improved appearance. Whether you opt to do it yourself or hire a handyman, paying attention to a couple of details around the house can make a big difference.

Some simple steps to home repair are to check your overhead lighting fixtures, leaking faucets, and old electrical wiring. Don't forget the outside of your house, it may need some repairs as well. A new front door or storm door can increase energy efficiency and provide an upgraded look. Replacement windows are a more expensive consideration, but many products can offer significant energy savings to counter-balance the cost.

House Painters
Painting your house is one of those tasks most people hate to think and put off until the damage or wear and tear has gotten to the point where it's causing damage to the surface underneath. Handyman Connection provides interior and exterior house painting...you pick the colors - we'll do the painting!

Whether you want to paint the entire outside of your house, a porch, the most weathered side of your house, or an outbuilding, Handyman Connection's house painters can get the job done quickly and done right.

If the paint on your house is peeling, it could be the result of painting over wet wood. It can also result from moisture within the house pushing its way out. Another cause of your house paint peeling is a dirty or a glossy surface. To undo the damage, all loose paint flakes must be scraped off with a wire brush and the surface must be sanded to smooth sharp edges. Bare spots should be primed before painting. Handyman Connection will scrape, sand and prime your surfaces prior to painting. Handyman Connection also uses the correct type of paint for each surface and environment such as a latex paint which will allow some moisture to pass through.

Kitchen Remodeling
If you are thinking about remodeling the kitchen in your home, Handyman Connection can help! Kitchens are becoming the central entertainment space for many of today's homes.  Kitchens not only provide a place for cooking and preparing meals, but serve as a gathering center for families.  A simple kitchen remodel can give you more space to move around in, or more room for your family and friends to gather.

Do you want a new look for your kitchen? Are you tired of the old cabinets? Nothing improves the look of your kitchen like new cabinetry.  In addition to looking great, it can add functionality, storage and enjoyment for years to come. There is really nothing that really adds value to a home more than a fully remodeled kitchen with new cabinets, counter tops and floor and wall tile.

Bathroom remodel wanted pictures?

ok. So recently ish I was at my aunt's house and they were watching a bathroom remodleing show. And in the show the host took the home owner to go tub shopping. And they finally decided on a cast iron tub. So then after it was finished, the bathroom was all in black and white and the walls were a light blue with a darker blue stipe all around the middle. I was hoping that SOMEONE would know what I was talking about and if they could maybe help me find the pictures or could tell me exactly where to go. Thank you so much for everyone's help!
