Green Remodeling

home remodeling ideas

The "green movement" which encourages us to think of environmentally conscious ways we can go about our everyday lives has taken hold in a new way in the last decade.  The motto of "think globally, live locally" is a beautiful way for us to implement green living principles because in truth we can only really make a difference in the daily decisions we make each day.  So when the time comes to put together a remodeling project, if you can integrate green principles even in how you go about planning to renovate your home, you can do your part to save the planet.

At a procurement level, we all can look for ways to buy green technology materials or materials that were made with recycled materials.  This is especially important if you are rebuilding walls because if you can use recycled materials rather than freshly produced lumber or wallboard, that cuts down on the amount of manufacturing work that has to be done to make building materials from scratch.  It also reduces how much the lumber industry has to kill trees to provide for our building needs which reduces our carbon footprint just one more step.  And step by step is how we win this battle to save our environment.

If you are thinking about way to make your home environmentally friendly during the planning phase for your remodel, that is an excellent point in time to begin to integrate new technologies into your daily life.  The simple step of putting solar panels in the roof while you are having your roof redone gives you the ability to go solar.  In doing so you reduce the amount of energy you have to pull from power companies who are producing that energy by burning fossil fuels or gas.  On top of that benefit, by producing your own energy, you save money because you become more self-sufficient.  In fact, many homes that produce solar energy make so much electricity that it is more than is needed for one home so they sell that energy back to the power company.  Yes, going green can even make you money.

When you have your walls or ceiling tore up during a remodeling project, this is a perfect time to put in extra insulation as well.  This one step can reduce the use of energy to heat or cool your home noticeably.  Your utilities bills will fall which is money in your pocket.  But more than that, your lower utility bill means you are using less energy to take care of your home, which means you are doing a good job of going green.  By being on the look out for the many ways you can use green technology in the design of your home renovation, you can make a huge leap into the future by starting to live green locally to benefit the earth globally.

Home Remodeling Plans

Someone once said, "The devil is in the details".  That phrase simply means that it is easy to make grand plans but those plans can come unraveled if the details are not practical and achievable.  This principle is certainly true when it comes to drawing up your plans for remodeling your home.  The big picture we can get.  Dreaming is something anyone can do.  But "the devil" is taking that dream and turning into blueprints, contractor's names and numbers, a work schedule that everybody can live with and a cost estimate that leaves you able to still pay your monthly mortgage and cable TV bill when the remodeling is done.

When we think of "plans" for a remodeling, it is easy to get an image of a set of blueprints.  That isn’t a bad image because blueprints are the detailed outline of that "dream" but broken down into very specific schematics that are designed to turn that dream into a reality.  Now, your particular remodeling program may not be so grand as to call for blueprints.  If you just want to paint the kitchen and put new wallpaper up in the baby's room, that can be done without an architect getting involved.  But even smaller projects like that call for some planning and preparation so when the day comes for the remodeling to take place, everything is ready so the work goes smoothly.

Whether your remodeling calls for you to only paint the living room or a complete overhaul of the house, knowing what materials are going to be needed is central to being ready when the workers get started.  If you have been involved in remodeling projects in the past, that will help a great deal in the preparation process.  If not, in order to avoid having to go through the experience of seeing a remodeling project unravel in order to learn from your failures, be sure you put twice as much time and effort into planning and preparation than you plan for the project itself.

A project that is well planned out will go like clockwork when the work gets underway.  That means that if there is painting to be done, you already did the work of matching the paint to the walls already there or in finding the right paint for the job and buying sufficient amounts so you won't run out once the workers start changing the colors of your walls.  If the project is more complicated, getting contractors lined up and scheduling them so if you need a plumber, an electrician, a mason and a painter all to be ready to work in tandem to do the work in one day, you have all of those specialists scheduled and ready to work on a schedule.

Becoming a skilled planner may be the most important job of the entire remodeling project.  But if you excel at planning the work, you will oversee a project that goes smoothly and stays on budget as well.  And while your pride will mostly be in how great your remodeling project looks when you get done, you deserve a pat on the back if you did your preparations well so the project was successful from start to finish.

Remodeling Costs

Learn more about remodeling costs here

There are two questions that have to be asked about any remodeling project.  But we like to just talk about the first one which is what will the end result of the remodeling work look like and how great it will be.  But the question of what it will cost is even more critical to making your dream home a reality and it is one that needs to be asked in considerable detail so you don't find yourself halfway through the remodeling with everything tore up and the money running out.

Generally speaking, if you are looking at your current home and what you want to see in it just isn’t there, the costs of remodeling your current structure will be less than selling your home and buying one that is closer to your dream home.  This is especially true in the current housing market where just getting those two sales and getting the financing to make that happen can take months or longer.  Plus when you buy a new home, you buy new problems.  So instead of dreaming of another home, why not look at the home you have which you know well and plan renovations to make it that dream come true.

remodel costs

The costs of remodeling will take in a lot of factors.  Before you even start to look into contractor costs or even costs of remodeling materials, you need a detailed plan that spells out exactly what you want done at a milestone level and the specifics of how that might come about at a detail level.  Without a firm definition of your vision for your remodeled home, you wont be able to do a cost evaluation to determine if what you want is even feasible within the constraints of the funds you have available for the project.

Even before you begin to put figures to the various aspects of the project, your work to define the project in broad goals and specific steps will reveal to you conflicts in the project and possibly areas of your remodeling dream that should be postponed in the interest of being able to execute a realistic remodeling project.  From there, it is a matter of getting a good idea for what each step of the project will cost so you can as precisely as possible narrow down the remodeling budget in a way that will keep you from seeing cost overruns as the project takes place.

Part of that evaluation is deciding who will do the work.  If you are skilled in certain aspects of remodeling, you can save money by putting yourself in as contractor for those steps.  But you may need to schedule time with plumbers, electricians, bricklayers and other skilled workman to perform the larger steps of the plan.  These labor costs combined with the cost of materials, which you can research using online hardware outlets will give you what you need to estimate the costs of your remodeling project.  With that realistic estimate in mind, you have what you need to move forward confidently knowing you have both the skills, the materials availability and the money to get the job done right.
